Austin American-Statesman - - LOCALBRIEFING - Compiled from staff reports

A man was arrested in Austin early Monday after he drove away from a police stop, then crashed his car into a home and severed a gas line as police pursued him, authorities said. Officers were responding to a report of a burglary on Burnet Road shortly before 4 a.m. Monday when they stopped a “suspicious vehicle” at Anderson Lane and Hardy Drive.

An officer smelled alcohol on the driver’s breath before the vehicle took off, police said. Police chased the car down Anderson and onto Burrell Drive, where the vehicle hit a gas main, breaking it open, and then crashed into a house. Police arrested the driver after paramedics examined him. No charges have been filed yet, officers said, and there were no injuries.

The Fire Department examined the gas leak and evacuated homes in the area as a precaution. Residents were allowed to return to their homes a couple of hours later, police said.
