Police report 24 DWI arrests
Austin police said they made 24 arrests for drunken driving over the Fourth of July weekend.
The arrests came during one of the department’s “no-refusal” periods, when officers can obtain search warrants from judges and then draw blood from drivers suspected of being intoxicated if they refuse to take a breath alcohol test or to voluntarily give a blood sample. Between 9 p.m. Saturday and 5 a.m. Sunday, police said they administered 13 breath tests, served 10 blood search warrants and, in a case where state law authorizes it without a warrant, took a mandatory blood draw. Half of all traffic fatalities last year were alcohol-related, police said.
