Skateboarding in Austin

Austin American-Statesman - - OPINION -

Re: June 29 Central Texas Digest item “Developer’s son hospitalized.”

Gary Bradley’s son was injured, critically, while skateboarding in a parking garage. It was a tragic accident (which in a sport like skateboarding does happen) and I wish the Bradley family the best and hope for his quick recovery.

Austin is not a skate-friendly town, despite the fact that boarding is one of the greenest things you can do. I received a ticket for riding in the bike lane, yet bicycles can basically ride wherever they want with impunity. The severe imbalance of ordinances against boarders, be they long or short boarders, but in favor of bicycles is why you will find groups of them in downtown parking garages.
