TXI to shutter wet-process kilns

Austin American-Statesman - - LOCALBRIEFING -

Grass-roots activists are claiming victory after Texas Industries announced that it will close all four of its wet-process cement kilns in Midlothian permanently.

TXI made the announcement in a statement Tuesday, calling the closings “an opportunity to enhance the operational efficiency of TXI’s modern (dry-process) kiln at the same plant.”

The Dallas-based construction materials company says the move will have no effect on present employment levels at the plant, 25 miles southwest of Dallas.

Plans that burn hazardous waste to fire the wet-process kilns have drawn opposition from grass-roots groups such as Downwinders at Risk. The group’s director, Jim Schermbeck, says TXI’s decision ends a 20-year fight against the kilns.
