Lawrence W. Fryer Jr. has been named the district’s chief op­er­a­tions of­fi­cer, com­plet­ing Su­per­in­ten­dent Meria Carstarphen’s se­nior cabi­net.

Fryer has a bach­e­lor’s de­gree from Prairie View A&M Uni­ver­sity and a mas­ter’s in na­tional se­cu­rity strat­egy from the Na­tional De­fense Uni­ver­sity. He also was a fel­low in the Broad Su­per­in­ten­dents Academy in 2006. The academy is a 10-month ex­ec­u­tive man­age­ment train­ing pro­gram de­signed to pre­pare se­nior ex­ec­u­tives from busi­ness to lead pub­lic school sys­tems, ac­cord­ing to its web­site.

Fryer is a for­mer chief op­er­at­ing of­fi­cer in the Prince Ge­orge’s County Pub­lic Schools in Mary­land and has served as a se­nior man­ag­ing con­sul­tant for IBM. He has more than 20 years’ ex­pe­ri­ence in the U.S. Ma­rine Corps, in­clud­ing two years as a lieu­tenant colonel at Fort Bliss.

The district also an­nounced that Paul Perez, for­mer as­sis­tant prin­ci­pal of St. Elmo and Lin­der ele­men­tary schools, will be prin­ci­pal of Wal­nut Creek Ele­men­tary School. Perez has a bach­e­lor’s from the Uni­ver­sity of Texas and a mas­ter’s in ed­u­ca­tional ad­min­is­tra­tion from the for­mer South­west Texas State Uni­ver­sity, now Texas State.
