Israel cares

Austin American-Statesman - - OPINION -

Re: June 28 letters “How Helen Thomas was treated.”

One of the letter writers said Jews prospered in other countries in history. I believe they forgot the Spanish and Latin American inquisitions, the Crusades, Muslim conquests, European pogroms and good, oldfashioned American racism towards Jews.

Regardless, the current Israeli situation isn’t directly related to previous persecutions; we aren’t trying to get back at Germany, (historical) Christians or other historical enemies. We are just trying to secure a haven for ourselves in the world.

If the reader calls the occupation of the “Palestinian” territories illegal, then they might as well call Texas and the western United States an “illegal occupation.” In both instances, the territories in question were taken through wars.

The difference is that Israel cares enough about the Palestinians not to massacre them, as we Americans did with native Mexican and Native American inhabitants.
