San Marcos Council Member John Thomaides says he’ll run for mayor,
San Marcos City Council Member John Thomaides, who has often voted in opposition with Mayor Susan Narvaiz, announced Wednesday evening that he will run for mayor in November. Thomaides, who owns a water treatment equipment company, was first elected in 2003 and reelected last year.
Often a voice of opposition against Nar- vaiz, he voted against the firing of former City Manager Rick Menchaca and has expressed opposition to large incentive deals for outside developers in the past.
“We must protect the jobs we have while preparing for and attracting the job we need,” Thomaides said in a statement. “I believe there is a balance between planning for our future economic growth while protecting the environment that makes San Marcos a beautiful place to live.”
Narvaiz has not indicated whether she will run for a fourth term. The mayor’s seat, along with that of Place 1 and Place 2 Council Members Kim Porterfield and Gaylord Bose, will be up for grabs. The filing period for the election begins July 25.
