Dis­si­dent ends long hunger strike

SANTA CLARA — Cuban op­po­si­tion ac­tivist Guillermo Fari­nas ended his 134-day hunger strike amid signs the com­mu­nist govern­ment will keep its prom­ise to free 52 po­lit­i­cal pris­on­ers. Kept alive by in­tra­venous feed­ing, Fari­nas, 48, had re­fused food and wa­ter since shortly af­ter the Feb. 23 death of fel­low dis­si­dent Or­lando Za­p­ata Ta­mayo, who died dur­ing his own lengthy prison hunger strike.
