Off the record, dude

Austin American-Statesman - - OPINION -

Why on Earth was Gen. Stanley McChrystal talking to Rolling Stone? What did he think would happen next?

Let us imagine that an officer under McChrystal’s command made public statements disparaging McChrystal, other officers and their command of the war? What would the general do? What excuse would he accept?

If McChrystal did not know that he was ending his career when he granted the inter- view, then he lacks the necessary foresight to be a general.

A wise president would, however, consider the general’s criticism. Improving military/civilian cooperation and the efficient conduct of this war could only look good for President Barack Obama.
