It took nothing less than an attempted Moon theft to end a monthslong losing streak for Universal Pictures.
“Despicable Me,” Universal’s formal entrance into the animated feature business, was a huge No. 1 at the North American box office over the weekend with an estimated $60.1 million. The result, partly driven by tickets to 3-D screenings, was far better than predicted.
“The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” fell to second place with $33.35 million. “Predators” grossed $25.3 million to open at No. 3.
