2 dead af­ter gun­fire at shop­ping cen­ter

Two men are dead af­ter a shoot­ing in North Austin early Sun­day, ac­cord­ing to po­lice of­fi­cials.

Austin po­lice of­fi­cer Den­nis Far­ris said of­fi­cers were dis­patched to a shop­ping cen­ter in the 8600 block of North La­mar Boule­vard about 3 a.m. af­ter gun­shots were fired.

Po­lice found a His­panic man dead at the scene, Far­ris said. An­other His­panic man was taken to Uni­ver­sity Med­i­cal Cen­ter Brack­en­ridge by paramedics and pro­nounced dead about 6:30 a.m., Far­ris said.

The strip cen­ter con­tains a taco trailer and sev­eral busi­nesses, in­clud­ing a nail sa­lon and an in­surance of­fice.

The de­tails sur­round­ing the shoot­ing are un­clear, but de­tec­tives are in­ter­view­ing more than a dozen wit­nesses, Far­ris said.

The names and ages of the vic­tims have not been re­leased pend­ing no­ti­fi­ca­tion of fam­ily, he said. Any wit­nesses are asked to call Crime Stop­pers at 472-8477.

These are the 16th and 17th homi­cides in Austin this year.
