teen attends naval seminar

Austin American-Statesman - - LOCAL BRIEFING - achievements@statesman.com; 445-1789

Matthew Blake Dwyer, 17, son of Patrick and Althea Dwyer of Wimberley, was selected to participate in the U.S. Naval Academy’s Summer Leadership Seminar.

The program is offered to young men and women who have just completed their junior year of high school. The participants are selected based on GPA, class standing and strong PSAT, SAT or ACT results. They must demonstrate achievement in athletics and extracurricular activities; show leadership potential; and show they are physically fit, have a positive attitude and are self-disciplined and of good moral character.

The program teaches prospective applicants about life at the Naval Academy. Each student attends a six-day session and experiences a part of naval life.

Students also participate in seamanship and navigation classes and take a cruise aboard a Navy Yard Patrol Craft to apply what they learned in class. Dwyer will be a senior at Wimberley High School in the fall.
