a new sight

Remember when each college football season included Bobby Bowden uttering ‘dadgummit’ and JoePa squinting through his Coke-bottle glasses? Well, times change. In December, Bowden retired after 34 seasons at Florida State. And now, Paterno can read a playbook without glasses after having corrective eye surgery in January.

The 83-year-old coach showed off his new, improved vision this spring during a news conference, removing his spectacles to glance at a notepad. ‘I can read my notes without glasses,’ Paterno told the gathered reporters. ‘It says here, “Keep your patience with these guys.” ’

Paterno’s doctors have recommended that he continue to wear his new, thinner glasses while on the sideline, not to uphold tradition but simply for protection.
