Judge permits U.S. trial of detainee

Austin American-Statesman - - WORLD & NATION -

NEW YORK — The first Guantánamo Bay detainee to be prosecuted in a civilian court was cleared for trial by a judge who said the suspect’s lengthy detention wasn’t grounds for dismissal. U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan ruled that being held for nearly five years at a secret CIA prison and at the military prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, didn’t violate Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani’s right to a speedy trial.
