of­fi­cials’ pay in­crease oK’d

County com­mis­sion­ers on Tues­day ap­proved a 2.5 per­cent pay in­crease for elected of­fi­cials not on the ju­di­ciary pay scale as part of the 2011 bud­get year be­gin­ning Oct. 1. The bud­get will be adopted Sept. 28.

The move passed with a 3-0 vote. Com­mis­sion­ers Mar­garet Gómez and Karen Hu­ber were ab­sent. No cit­i­zens spoke dur­ing a pub­lic hear­ing on the is­sue Tues­day.

The Com­mis­sion­ers Court wants to in­clude a 2.5 .per­cent pay in­crease for all em­ploy­ees in the 2011 pre­lim­i­nary bud­get at a cost of about $6.6 mil­lion, ac­cord­ing to a county memo. The in­crease will help off­set what em­ploy­ees pay in in­creased health in­surance costs, the memo said. With changes to the health in­surance plan ap­proved by com­mis­sion­ers last month, there was an 8 per­cent, or $4.4 mil­lion, in­crease in health in­surance costs for county em­ploy­ees, ac­cord­ing to bud­get di­rec­tor Leroy Nel­lis.
