Education Austin, which represents about 4,000 Austin school district teachers and other employees, is one of eight groups nationally to receive grant money from the American Federation of Teachers Innovation Fund.

Education Austin will receive $185,000 the first year and will use the grant to work with Austin Interfaith — a coalition of religious congregations, public schools and unions — in hopes of creating in-district charter schools. The district oversees such schools, but daily operations are managed by an outside organization.

Education Austin President Louis Malfaro said the groups hope to bring teachers, parents and neighborhoods together to develop creative school design models that have local community support.
