El Paso hospital to stop hiring tobacco users

Austin American-Statesman - - LOCALBRIEFING -

EL PASO — El Paso’s county hospital won’t hire tobacco users after Oct. 1.

University Medical Center CEO Jim Valenti said the policy was put in place so the hospital, which has already banned smoking on hospital property, could encourage employees to lead healthier lives.

Several hospitals around the country have similar policies, though University Medical Center appears to be the first Texas hospital to make such a move.
