Standing by Shannon

Austin American-Statesman - - SPORTS -

Coach Randy Shannon has returned the U to respectability in his first three seasons, but the Hurricanes are still waiting for that breakout season that ends with a BCS bowl appearance. After starting 5-1 last year, Miami was 4-3 in its final seven games, including a loss to Wisconsin in the Champs Sports Bowl.

The Miami brass rewarded Shannon with a four-year contract extension in the offseason, indicating they believe he is the coach to lead the Hurricanes back to national prominence. We’ll see. Those in Shannon’s first recruiting class are now juniors and redshirt sophomores, players who have been in the program for three years.

The Canes hope this will be a season of firsts for their coach, meaning a first ACC title and a first bowl victory.

Miami quarterback Jacory Harris was inconsistent in the second half of last season but finished with solid statistics. He could be a Heisman Trophy candidate this fall.
