Fair Elections Act

Austin American-Statesman - - OPINION -

The bipartisan Fair Elections Act, which is before Congress, would create a system of public financing for federal elections, doing much to reduce the influence of massive corporate campaign contributions on our democracy. Considering that the Supreme Court ruling earlier this year will allow unlimited corporate political contributions, such a system is needed now more than ever.

The bill is being supported by Democrats and Republicans. Of Austin-area representatives, Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Austin, has signed on as a co-sponsor, but Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Austin, and Rep. Lamar Smith, R-San Antonio, have not.

Why not? What are they waiting for?
