ACC and property tax exemptions

Austin American-Statesman - - OPINION -

Re: July 6 article “ACC board OKs budget, raise.”

It was with a double-take that I read the article on Austin Community College adopting its budget. I could scarcely believe that in an era of never-ending tax increases for property owners, ACC has sensibly dropped property tax exemptions on designated historic homes and will use that extra revenue in conjunction with other revenue sources to leave its tax rate essentially unchanged over last year.

Some people will even see a lower tax bill. I cannot shout “bravo” loud enough. If only the Austin Independent School District would similarly strike these tax exemptions, which have become a drain on everyone else’s pocketbooks.

The City of Austin might have made a policy decision on historic homes, but other taxing entities should not be beholden to the same dysfunctional tax structure. wEndy gordon
