Man on flyover snarls I-35 traffic

Austin American-Statesman - - LOCALBRIEFING -

A standoff between Austin police and a man threatening to jump off a flyover bridge closed the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 for more than five hours early Friday, snarling traffic for miles.

Starting about 2 a.m., the flyover and northbound I-35 from Ben White Boulevard to the Woodward and Oltorf exits were closed, a police official said.

For several hours, officers on the flyover tried to negotiate with the man, who was seen hanging off the ledge of the southbound flyover several times.

Shortly before 7:30 a.m., the man, who was in his late 30s to early 40s but was not identified, got off the ledge and was escorted by police to the exit ramp, where he was taken into custody.
