AT&T Inc. is adding capacity in parts of Austin to its most advanced wireless network to handle increased demand for voice and data services, especially during peak hours.

The Dallas-based carrier, which is the exclusive carrier for Apple Inc.’s popular iPhone, said 85 cell sites have been upgraded to add communications capacity downtown, along the U.S. 183 corridor and along Interstate 35 north to Round Rock. Other sites will be added in the months ahead.

The upgrade is being accomplished by reallocating wireless communications frequencies previously dedicated to other kinds of devices. As a result of the changes, AT&T customers for 3G (third-generation) cellular service will experience improved voice and data connectivity and performance, the company said.
