Austin police Sgt. Robert Hightower was presented with the Patriot Award by the Texas Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.

Hightower was recognized for his work with officer Matt Perritte, a U.S. Army Reserve captain. Since Perritte graduated from the police academy last year, Hightower has ensured that he met his military training requirements, even when work schedules became increasingly demanding and the division was understaffed. Hightower also worked closely with Perritte to plan for his deployment to Afghanistan.

The Austin Police Department has been recognized as a model for other public safety organizations in how it takes care of its employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve. The Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve is a Department of Defense agency.
