Voeckler thrills fans
French national champion Thomas Voeckler won Monday’s stage, giving the home country its fifth stage victory of this Tour.
He attacked with about 16 miles to go and won easily, becoming the first French national champion to win a Tour stage since Jacky Durand in 1994.
Voeckler has been a favorite with the locals since 2004, when he wore the overall leader’s yellow jersey for several stages early in the Tour.
Overall, it’s France’s best showing at the Tour in 16 years. The last French rider to win the Tour de France was Bernard Hinault, 25 years ago.
