Voeck­ler thrills fans

French na­tional cham­pion Thomas Voeck­ler won Mon­day’s stage, giv­ing the home coun­try its fifth stage vic­tory of this Tour.

He at­tacked with about 16 miles to go and won eas­ily, be­com­ing the first French na­tional cham­pion to win a Tour stage since Jacky Du­rand in 1994.

Voeck­ler has been a fa­vorite with the lo­cals since 2004, when he wore the over­all leader’s yel­low jersey for sev­eral stages early in the Tour.

Over­all, it’s France’s best show­ing at the Tour in 16 years. The last French rider to win the Tour de France was Bernard Hin­ault, 25 years ago.
