Perry says plan is inadequate

Austin American-Statesman - - LOCAL BRIEFING -

Gov. Rick Perry says Washington isn’t sending enough troops to protect the U.S.Mexico border.

Perry, speaking to reporters Wednesday in Austin, said the plan to send 1,200 National Guard troops next month to border areas — including 250 for Texas — won’t get the job done.

“I guess it’s better than nothing, which is what we’ve had for a long time,” Perry said.

Perry estimated that 3,000 or more new agents were needed along the border to adequately secure it. He also said he would welcome a meeting on border security with President Barack Obama, who is planning to raise money for Demo-

crats in Texas in early August.
