Mul­ti­ple fac­tors be­hind death

Austin po­lice have turned over a May homi­cide case to the Travis County district at­tor­ney’s of­fice af­ter a med­i­cal ex­am­iner’s re­port said two other fac­tors con­trib­uted in the death.

Lawrence Brown, 32, died at a hos­pi­tal May 12 af­ter he sus­tained blunt force trauma dur­ing a fight with an­other man at 13th and Chicon streets about 3 a.m., po­lice said. But the med­i­cal ex­am­iner’s re­port said Brown also died from an ex­ist­ing heart con­di­tion and nar­cotic tox­i­c­ity.

Austin po­lice De­tec­tive Dou­glas Rice said a sus­pect was brought in and in­ter­viewed, but no charges had been filed be­cause of the other two fac­tors cited in Brown’s death. Po­lice did not iden­tify the man in­volved in the case be­cause he has not been charged.

Rice said the case is now in the hands of pros­e­cu­tors, who will de­cide whether to take the case be­fore a grand jury.

He said po­lice still want to in­ter­view about 20 peo­ple who wit­nessed the fight.
