AUSTIN Police go on record for new cameras
Digital upgrade would cost $15.5 million
New video cameras on both patrol cars and motorcycles come with a $15.5 million price tag and would be phased in beginning in January 2011, first in East Austin. Police say an unprecedented capacity for recorded data and the technology allowing automatic camera triggers were factors in the cost.
Officers would wear a wireless body microphone that can activate the video camera from up to 1,000 feet away and record each officer’s voice.
