Deserving veterans

Austin American-Statesman - - OPINION -

Thank you for your recent coverage of military benefits and Iraqi war vet Serena Hayden.

I’ve had occasion to spend time with Serena over the past several years. She does have a dazzling smile. She also has a kind and gentle spirit. She’s introspective and quiet but quick to laugh. And at 28, she has been through more in one year than I’ve been through in 57.

I, like many Americans, will never be able to fully grasp the enormity or complexities of the sacrifice she and all service men and women make every day. I’m sure that sacrifice too often doesn’t end with their service, but continues to take a physical and emotional toll. All veterans deserve nothing less than the highest regard and support our country can provide.

I hope Serena’s rightful request for benefits is granted quickly; she has earned them — and nothing should ever dim that smile.
