American League roundup
New York 7, Kansas City 1: A.J. Burnett bounced back from a horrible start cut short by a self-inflicted injury to pitch five scoreless innings, Robinson Cano hit a three-run double and the Yankees beat the Royals in a game delayed by a wicked thunderstorm. New York’s Jorge Posada drove in his 1,000th career run with an RBI double in the first. He had an RBI single in the seventh. Burnett (8-8) was starting six days after he cut both hands on a plastic lineupcard holder when he slammed open doors in the clubhouse out of frustration.
Baltimore 3, Minnesota 2: Jeremy Guthrie allowed two runs in seven innings to earn his first win since May 25, Luke Scott homered and the Orioles defeated the Twins. Joe Mauer gave the Twins a 2-1 lead with a two-run homer in the sixth, but Scott answered with a two-run drive in the bottom half to give Baltimore its second win in eight games since the All-Star break. Miguel Tejada had two hits and scored twice for the Orioles, who are 3-50 when scoring fewer than four runs. Guthrie (4-10) was 0-6 in his last nine starts.
Toronto-Detroit postponed: The game between the Blue Jays and Tigers was postponed due to rain. It will be made up Sunday as part of a day-night doubleheader.
