Harwell’s even-par round good for 2-stroke victory

Austin American-Statesman - - SPORTS - By Doug Smith

Colby Harwell had never played a tournament in Austin before this weekend’s Central Texas Amateur at Forest Creek Golf Club. The 25-year-old from Waco might want to come back, considering his two-stroke victory Sunday.

Harwell followed his opening round of 1-under 71 Saturday with an even-par 72 Sunday to wrap up the title with a 36-hole total of 1-under 143.

Larry Nunez took second with a final round of 73 for a tournament total of 1-over 145.

Jamey Taylor made a holein-one on the par-3 17th hole on the way to a final-round 73 to tie for third at 147 with firstround leader Aneil Patel, who closed with a 77.

Trent Redfern, Nicholas Cristea and Trey Caldwell tied for fifth at 148.

Harwell had played Forest Creek only once before this weekend’s tournament, and he knew it would be a challenging event.

“This is a real good course, a real tough course,” Harwell said. “It is a very demanding driving course, but I managed to keep the ball in play most of the time.

“I have been playing really well the last few weeks, and fortunately that kept up,” Harwell said.

“Putting is my strength. I usually make five or six birdies a round.

“I didn’t do that this week, but I still putted well and made three birdies each round and that turned out to be enough.”
