Austin American-Statesman - - BUSINESSBRIEFING -

The Austin-Round Rock area ranked 26th among U.S. metropolitan areas in exports, according to a study released Monday by the Brookings Institution.

The study said Austin had $10.2 billion in exports in 2008, with its largest export industry being computer and electronic products. The largest export area in the country was greater New York with $85.2 billion. New York’s leading export industry is chemicals.

Much of Austin’s export industry is led by semiconductors made by Samsung Electronics Co., Freescale Semiconductor and Spansion Inc., as well as semiconductor manufacturing equipment, led by Applied Materials Inc. Almost all chips manufactured in Austin are shipped to Asia for assembly and packaging, which counts as an export.
