Finch closes Team USA career with Cup title

Austin American-Statesman - - SPORTSBRIEFING -

Jennie Finch is closing out her international career as a champion. Caitlin Lowe had a two-run triple, and the United States beat Japan 5-1 Monday night in Oklahoma City to win its fourth straight World Cup title in Finch’s final game in red, white and blue.

Finch, a former Austinarea resident, received a standing ovation from the crowd. The two-time Olympian and 2004 gold medalist played first base in her finale after tossing a three-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts earlier in the day.

At 29, Finch decided to give up softball to spend more time with her family (husband Casey Daigle has pitched this season for the Round Rock Express and Houston Astros). She didn’t allow a run in 182⁄3 innings at the World Cup.
