The Na­tional In­sti­tute for Trauma and Loss has named the district’s guid­ance and coun­sel­ing pro­gram an ac­cred­ited in­sti­tute for trauma and loss.

The pro­gram re­ceived the ac­cred­i­ta­tion af­ter 60 district coun­selors re­ceived spe­cial­ized train­ing by the in­sti­tute in the level-one cer­ti­fi­ca­tion spe­cial­ist pro­gram for trauma and loss. Some coun­selors re­ceived more than 85 hours of in­struc­tion and course­work.

The cer­ti­fi­ca­tion pro­gram taught the district’s coun­selors how to deal with emer­gency events and taught early in­ter­ven­tion tools and tech­niques to care for stu­dents in trauma and loss events. The district has five trauma and loss re­sponse teams.

The in­sti­tute was founded by Wil­liam Steele, who is known for his work at Columbine High School and in New York af­ter the events of 9/11.
