Cleve­land 4, New York 1: In his ma­jor league de­but, Josh Tom­lin took a shutout into the eighth in­ning against the Yan­kees. The 25-year-old Tom­lin out­pitched for­mer In­di­ans ace CC Sa­bathia (13-4), hand­ing the left-han­der his first loss in 12 starts since May 23. A 19th-round pick out of Texas Tech in 2006, he went 51-24 with a 3.20 ERA in the mi­nor leagues. Alex Ro­driguez, still chas­ing his 600th home run, went 0 for 4 on his 35th birth­day.

Tampa Bay 3, Detroit 2: James Shields gave up two runs over 62⁄ in­nings, Matt Joyce hit a tiebreak­ing 3 RBI dou­ble and the Rays beat the Tigers. Shields (9-9) al­lowed nine hits, one walk and had seven strike­outs one day af­ter team­mate Matt Garza threw Tampa Bay’s first no-hit­ter.

Toronto 8, Bal­ti­more 2: Jose Bautista hit two home runs, giv­ing him a ma­jor league-lead­ing 30 as the Blue Jays beat the Ori­oles for the 11th con­sec­u­tive time. It was the fifth mul­ti­homer game of the sea­son for Bautista, who has home­red in three straight and leads the AL with 10 in July.

Chicago 11, Seat­tle 0: Alexei Ramirez, An­druw Jones and Paul Kon­erko home­red, pow­er­ing Gavin Floyd and the White Sox to a blowout win. Ramirez fin­ished with three hits and three RBIs, and Jones also drove in three for Chicago.

Min­nesota 11, Kansas City 2: Rookie Danny Va­len­cia drove in three runs, and Carl Pa­vano won his eighth straight de­ci­sion for the Twins. The Roy­als have been outscored 42-9 in the last three games.
