The 25-year-old Tomlin outpitched former Indians ace CC Sabathia (13-4), handing the left-hander his first loss in 12 starts since May 23. A 19th-round pick out of Texas Tech in 2006, he went 51-24 with a 3.20 ERA in the minor leagues. Alex Rodriguez, still chasing his 600th home run, went 0 for 4 on his 35th birthday.
Tampa Bay 3, Detroit 2: James Shields gave up two runs over 62⁄ innings, Matt Joyce hit a tiebreaking 3 RBI double and the Rays beat the Tigers. Shields (9-9) allowed nine hits, one walk and had seven strikeouts one day after teammate Matt Garza threw Tampa Bay’s first no-hitter.
Toronto 8, Baltimore 2: Jose Bautista hit two home runs, giving him a major league-leading 30 as the Blue Jays beat the Orioles for the 11th consecutive time. It was the fifth multihomer game of the season for Bautista, who has homered in three straight and leads the AL with 10 in July.
Chicago 11, Seattle 0: Alexei Ramirez, Andruw Jones and Paul Konerko homered, powering Gavin Floyd and the White Sox to a blowout win. Ramirez finished with three hits and three RBIs, and Jones also drove in three for Chicago.
Minnesota 11, Kansas City 2: Rookie Danny Valencia drove in three runs, and Carl Pavano won his eighth straight decision for the Twins. The Royals have been outscored 42-9 in the last three games.
