Scope-smuggling suspect held

Austin American-Statesman - - LOCALBRIEFING - Compiled from wire reports

A 24-year-old woman from Plano is under house arrest, accused of trying to smuggle three high-tech night-vision scopes into Russia without a license, the Dallas Morning News reported Wednesday.

Anna Fermanova’s attorney Scott Palmer said she is a not spy and has no ties to a suspected Russian spy ring recently busted up in the Northeast.

Federal agents acting on a tip discovered the sights in a pair of Ugg boots inside Fermanova’s luggage at New York’s JFK International Airport on March 1. Agents with Immigration and Customs Enforcement confiscated the scopes and allowed Fermanova to continue on her connecting flight to Moscow, where she lives with her husband. She was arrested July 15 in Plano when she returned to visit her parents.

Palmer said Fermanova bought the scopes legally online. He said they were for her husband, who wanted them for a friend who is a hunter.
