Martinez wins 14-and-under junior crown by 4 strokes
William Martinez of Austin won the Boys 14 and under division in the Texas State Junior Championships Wednesday at Horseshoe Bay Apple Rock.
Martinez followed an opening round of even par 72 Tuesday with a 74 Wednesday for a winning 36-hole total of 146. Tyler Ware of Georgetown tied for second at 150 with D.J. Godoy.
Courtney Dow of Frisco won the girls 14 and under division with a 36-hole total of 156.
Benjamin Bankhead of McKinney and Jessa LaBarbera of Allen took the lead in the 15-18 year old divisions.
Bankhead shot at 2-under par 69 Wednesay at Ram Rock for the boys lead at even par 142 for 36 holes. Dylan Shephard of Austin was tied for second at 143 with Roman Robledo of Harlingen.
LaBarbera shot 76 Wednesday for a 36-hole score of 153. Austin’s Haley Haught shot 78 Wednesday and was alone in second place at 154.
In the Texas Women’s Golf Association Championship at the University of Texas Golf Club, Westlake High School senior Taylor Moreno defeated defending champion Stacy Dennis of Huntsville, 3 and 2, in the round of 16.
Three matches were still in progress when play was suspended for the day due to lightning in the area. Those matches will be completed this morning with the quarterfinal matches to follow. Semifinal matches will be played this afternoon and the championship final will be held Friday.
