Martinez wins 14-and-un­der ju­nior crown by 4 strokes


Wil­liam Martinez of Austin won the Boys 14 and un­der di­vi­sion in the Texas State Ju­nior Cham­pi­onships Wed­nes­day at Horse­shoe Bay Ap­ple Rock.

Martinez fol­lowed an open­ing round of even par 72 Tues­day with a 74 Wed­nes­day for a win­ning 36-hole to­tal of 146. Tyler Ware of Ge­orge­town tied for sec­ond at 150 with D.J. Godoy.

Court­ney Dow of Frisco won the girls 14 and un­der di­vi­sion with a 36-hole to­tal of 156.

Ben­jamin Bankhead of McKin­ney and Jessa LaBar­bera of Allen took the lead in the 15-18 year old di­vi­sions.

Bankhead shot at 2-un­der par 69 Wed­ne­say at Ram Rock for the boys lead at even par 142 for 36 holes. Dylan Shephard of Austin was tied for sec­ond at 143 with Ro­man Robledo of Har­lin­gen.

LaBar­bera shot 76 Wed­nes­day for a 36-hole score of 153. Austin’s Ha­ley Haught shot 78 Wed­nes­day and was alone in sec­ond place at 154.

In the Texas Women’s Golf As­so­ci­a­tion Cham­pi­onship at the Uni­ver­sity of Texas Golf Club, West­lake High School se­nior Tay­lor Moreno de­feated de­fend­ing cham­pion Stacy Den­nis of Huntsville, 3 and 2, in the round of 16.

Three matches were still in progress when play was sus­pended for the day due to light­ning in the area. Those matches will be com­pleted this morn­ing with the quar­ter­fi­nal matches to fol­low. Semi­fi­nal matches will be played this af­ter­noon and the cham­pi­onship fi­nal will be held Fri­day.
