Fe­male pris­oner dies in cus­tody

A woman died at the Travis County Cor­rec­tional Com­plex on Wed­nes­day af­ter sher­iff’s of­fi­cials said she had com­plained of breath­ing prob­lems.

Donita Jack­son, 49, had been in the Del Valle jail since May on a charge of pos­ses­sion of a con­trolled sub­stance and an ap­pli­ca­tion to re­voke com­mu­nity su­per­vi­sion.

Of­fi­cials said Jack­son was be­ing taken from her hous­ing unit in a wheel­chair to the med­i­cal sec­tion of the jail when she slumped over. Cor­rec­tional staff, jail med­i­cal staff and Austin-Travis County Emer­gency Med­i­cal Ser­vices at­tempted to re­vive her.

The ini­tial med­i­cal ex­am­iner’s re­port in­di­cates Jack­son died from nat­u­ral causes re­sult­ing from se­vere health is­sues, but tox­i­col­ogy tests are still pend­ing.

The in­ci­dent is be­ing in­ves­ti­gated by the sher­iff’s of­fice ma­jor crimes unit and in­ter­nal af­fairs.

Jack­son is the third pris­oner to die in Travis County cus­tody this year.
