Female prisoner dies in custody
A woman died at the Travis County Correctional Complex on Wednesday after sheriff’s officials said she had complained of breathing problems.
Donita Jackson, 49, had been in the Del Valle jail since May on a charge of possession of a controlled substance and an application to revoke community supervision.
Officials said Jackson was being taken from her housing unit in a wheelchair to the medical section of the jail when she slumped over. Correctional staff, jail medical staff and Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services attempted to revive her.
The initial medical examiner’s report indicates Jackson died from natural causes resulting from severe health issues, but toxicology tests are still pending.
The incident is being investigated by the sheriff’s office major crimes unit and internal affairs.
Jackson is the third prisoner to die in Travis County custody this year.
