Part­ner ben­e­fits on school board agenda

Trustee wants up-or­down vote on plan to of­fer in­surance ben­e­fits to un­mar­ried cou­ples.

Nearly two months af­ter the Pflugerville school district an­nounced it would offier in­surance bene­flts next year to domestic part­ners, the school board is re­viv­ing the con­tro­ver­sial is­sue.

Trustee Jimmy Don Havins has called for the is­sue to be put on the agenda at the Dec. 13 board meet­ing. He said he plans to make a mo­tion to re­vert to the cur­rent cov­er­age, which does not in­clude un­mar­ried part­ners, and wants “an up or down vote.”

In early Oc­to­ber the district be­gan hand­ing out in­for­ma­tion on its 2013 in­surance bene­flts, offier­ing cov­er­age to same-sex and het­ero­sex­ual domestic part­ners for the flrst time.
