The district pays only for em­ployee cov­er­age. Em­ploy­ees pay the pre­mi­ums for fam­ily mem­bers, and the same prac­tice would be in place for the domestic part­ners.

The ben­e­fits, which go into ef­fect Jan. 1, would af­fect same-sex cou­ples and their fam­i­lies, as well as het­ero­sex­u­als in longterm un­mar­ried re­la­tion­ships. Em­ploy­ees be­gan en­rolling the week of Oct. 22. It’s un­clear how many em­ploy­ees signed up to have domestic part­ners cov­ered.

The new pol­icy trig­gered com­mu­nity re­sponse on both sides of the is­sue, bring­ing at least 150 peo­ple to a school board meet­ing in Oc­to­ber. Many who spoke asked trustees to put the part­ner ben­e­fits mat­ter to a board vote.
