Union: Majority favor the proposal
The district pays only for employee coverage. Employees pay the premiums for family members, and the same practice would be in place for the domestic partners.
The benefits, which go into effect Jan. 1, would affect same-sex couples and their families, as well as heterosexuals in longterm unmarried relationships. Employees began enrolling the week of Oct. 22. It’s unclear how many employees signed up to have domestic partners covered.
The new policy triggered community response on both sides of the issue, bringing at least 150 people to a school board meeting in October. Many who spoke asked trustees to put the partner benefits matter to a board vote.
