Teen has classes and holds two jobs
Communities, a nonprofit that helps find quality housing for low-income families.
This is a unique family, headed by Rowe, who assumed care for her brother and sister when their mother died of a heart attack earlier this year.
“I wasn’t ready for this,” said Rowe. “It’s hard work, especially when it comes to parenting Patsy. She’s almost my age.”
Rowe gets good reviews from her siblings and is determined to give them a good life, even if it means putting hers on hold. She was in her final semester in high school and planned to join the Marines or Air Force when her mother died. She claimed guardianship of her half-brother and half-sister. The children’s father is in prison.
Rowe is taking two classes at Austin Community College and has two jobs, one at an afterschool care program and the other at a sports bar.
The family’s needs are great. LaRonda needs a car to get to school and work. A reader is donating a computer to them, but they need Internet service and a printer to do their homework. They need dishes and gift cards for clothing and groceries as well as presents for Christmas.
