Austin adoption agency to close after 91 years
Marywood struggled as placements declined and state support and private donations fell.
Marywood Children and Family Services, a 91-year-old Austin adoption agency that struggled in recent years with flnancial problems and plummeting placements, will close at the end of this month.
The group, a ministry of Catholic Charities of Central Texas, will shutter its doors Dec. 31, said Barbara Budde, director of the Office of Social Concerns at the Catholic Diocese of Austin. Two staffiers will be laid offi. Another two have already transitioned into other jobs at the diocese, and the executive director plans to retire.
The handful of parents currently in the pre-adoption process will be referred to other agencies, Budde said.
“It’s been a wonderful relationship,” she said.
