Austin adop­tion agency to close af­ter 91 years

Mary­wood strug­gled as place­ments de­clined and state sup­port and pri­vate do­na­tions fell.

Mary­wood Chil­dren and Fam­ily Ser­vices, a 91-year-old Austin adop­tion agency that strug­gled in re­cent years with flnan­cial prob­lems and plum­met­ing place­ments, will close at the end of this month.

The group, a min­istry of Catholic Char­i­ties of Cen­tral Texas, will shut­ter its doors Dec. 31, said Bar­bara Budde, di­rec­tor of the Of­fice of So­cial Con­cerns at the Catholic Dio­cese of Austin. Two staffiers will be laid offi. An­other two have al­ready tran­si­tioned into other jobs at the dio­cese, and the ex­ec­u­tive di­rec­tor plans to re­tire.

The hand­ful of par­ents cur­rently in the pre-adop­tion process will be re­ferred to other agen­cies, Budde said.

“It’s been a won­der­ful re­la­tion­ship,” she said.
