Schools re­place cafe­te­ria glass

Kitchen ‘sneeze guards’ are be­ing re­placed at 18 schools af­ter glass was found in stu­dent meals.

The Austin school district is re­plac­ing glass pan­els in kitchens at 18 schools af­ter glass shards were found last week in cafe­te­ria lunch food at Al­li­son Ele­men­tary.

The shards, which fell from the so-called sneeze guards that serve as bar­ri­ers be­tween the food and the re­ceiv­ing line, were found in an in­di­vid­ual por­tion of pinto beans. More than 100 prekinder­garten and kinder­garten stu­dents had al­ready gone through the line Nov. 29 be­fore the glass shards were spot­ted by one of the food servers.

Plas­tic shields were in­stalled on the lunch line at Al­li­son Ele­men­tary on Wed­nes­day af­ter glass shards were found last week in cafe­te­ria meals.
