A debate over who should run Austin Energy, intensifying as the Legislature prepares to convene next month, has thrust one-time foes onto the same side of the argument.

This week, City Manager Marc Ott and watchdog group Public Citizen bridged months of disagreements about Austin Energy and other matters by separately concluding that management of the city-owned electric utility shouldn’t be turned over to an independent board of energy experts. A host of City Council advisers and politically inffuential players have been urging the council to make such a change, mainly to insulate Austin Energy from dayto-day political pressures.
