$4 million earmarked to improve Cr 179
City officials are working to get ahead of an expected jump in traffic on what is now a short, two-lane county road.
The Leander City Council voted to award a $3.89 million contract with Chasco Constructors, Ltd., Thursday night for work on CR 179, which stretches from Ronald Reagan Boulevard eastward to Sam Bass Road. The city will also commit $125,000 for utility relocation and material testing.
The work will prepare the road to handle the additional traffic expected to follow multiple subdivisions set to develop in the area, as well as a possible elementary school and an increased student population at Stiles Middle School, which opened this year and is located on CR 179, City Manager Kent Cagle said.
The project is funded by the city, Williamson County and the Leander school district, according to city documents.
Construction, which will widen the road to accommodate four lanes of traffic, probably will not begin until early 2013, Cagle said, and could be complete in about nine months.
The city recently completed work on some roads in the La Frontera area — where many streets were dipping, cracking and falling apart — and is set to repair the rest, after the City Council approved a $324,515 engineering contract Kennedy Consulting, Ltd.
The engineering will prepare for the second phase of a roughly $3 million project to rehabilitate roads around the shopping center. The first phase rebuilt almost all of La Frontera Boulevard and Hester’s Crossing Boulevard. The second phase will repair the remaining streets in La Frontera, including Sundance Parkway, Kouri Drive and Parker Drive, according to city documents.
