Horns, Bruins in similar positions
TEXAS-UCLA matchup pits teams struggling to find their way back to national prominence.
If Rick Barnes wants empathy, he need not look beyond the other bench Saturday at Reliant Stadium.
The Longhorns coach and UCLA’s Ben Howland are the stewards of programs that are struggling to establish solid footing at a time when so many young college players have one foot out the door before they attend their first practice.
Howland’s Bruins reached the NCAA Final Four three consecutive seasons, from 2006-08, but have missed the tournament two of the last three years.
Barnes took the Longhorns to the round of 16 or beyond five times in seven seasons, from 2002-08, including a Final Four appearance in 2003. But the Longhorns, while never failing to reach the tournament under him, have produced only one NCAA victory in the last three years.
Howland has lost two freshmen (Kevin Love and Jrue Holiday) and one sophomore (Russell Westbrook) to the NBA Draft since 2008. Other talented players have transferred.
