If Rick Barnes wants em­pa­thy, he need not look be­yond the other bench Satur­day at Re­liant Sta­dium.

The Longhorns coach and UCLA’s Ben How­land are the stew­ards of pro­grams that are strug­gling to es­tab­lish solid foot­ing at a time when so many young col­lege play­ers have one foot out the door be­fore they at­tend their first prac­tice.

How­land’s Bru­ins reached the NCAA Fi­nal Four three con­sec­u­tive sea­sons, from 2006-08, but have missed the tour­na­ment two of the last three years.

Barnes took the Longhorns to the round of 16 or be­yond five times in seven sea­sons, from 2002-08, in­clud­ing a Fi­nal Four ap­pear­ance in 2003. But the Longhorns, while never fail­ing to reach the tour­na­ment un­der him, have pro­duced only one NCAA vic­tory in the last three years.

How­land has lost two fresh­men (Kevin Love and Jrue Hol­i­day) and one sopho­more (Rus­sell West­brook) to the NBA Draft since 2008. Other tal­ented play­ers have trans­ferred.

Ssion II play­offs ad­vances Cedar Park to the state semi­fi­nals for the first time in school his­tory.

The Tim­ber­wolves (12-2) will now play ei­ther Manor or Fort Bend Mar­shall in a state semi­fi­nal game. The Mus­tangs and Buf­faloes will bat­tle for the right to play Cedar Park on Satur­day night at the Alam­od­ome.

Cedar Park was mak­ing its third straight trip to the state quar­ter­fi­nals. In the past two sea­sons, the Tim­ber­wolves lost 21-20 and 14-9 to Lake Travis in Class 4A, Di­vi­sion I quar­ter­fi­nal games that were played at Royal-Me­mo­rial Sta­dium.
