Lead­ers call for calm af­ter at­tack

Lead­ers across North­ern Ire­land ap­pealed Tues­day for an end to a week of Protes­tant street protests af­ter a gang sur­rounded a po­lice­woman’s car and hurled a Molo­tov cock­tail in­side. Po­lice said the of­fi­cer wasn’t wounded be­cause the car didn’t catch on fire, but about 40 other po­lice have been hurt dur­ing the past week of street clashes. Ex­trem­ists from the Bri­tish Protes­tant ma­jor­ity have turned out in force, block­ing roads through­out Belfast and sev­eral sub­urbs since Belfast City Coun­cil voted Dec. 3 to stop fly­ing the Bri­tish flag year-round.
