De­fense: In­tent key in dou­ble homi­cide

The de­fense in the cap­i­tal mur­der trial of Jose Aviles isn’t con­test­ing whether he killed Norma Hur­tado and her mother Maria Hur­tado in April 2011. They are dis­put­ing his in­tent.

In­ves­ti­ga­tors say Aviles, 47, fa­tally shot the Hur­ta­dos be­cause he dis­ap­proved of his teenage daugh­ter’s les­bian re­la­tion­ship with Norma Hur­tado, 24. The deaths prompted many across Cen­tral Texas to con­demn what they de­scribed as a hat­edriven crime.
