Austin American-Statesman - - AUSTIN360 DAILY - “Newworks: Michael Menchaca.”

Up-and-coming San Antonio artist Michael Menchaca re-figures the contemporary events and politics of the U.S.-Mexico border with an original cast of cartoon characters. In his colorful, highly symbolic and seem- ingly playful work, Menchaca recast the tough stories of drug smuggling, migrant immigration and human trafficking. Menchaca cleverly combines pre-Columbian vi- sual storytelling with Pop Art style to understand cultural conflicts and misunderstandings. Hours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays-Sundays through Feb. 17. Laguna Gloria, AMOA- Arthouse, 3809 W. 35th St. Free. www.amoa-arthouse. org.
