Be­fore teach­ing any­thing else, leg­endary UCLA coach John Wooden would show his bas­ket­ball play­ers how to prop­erly put on their socks and shoes.

Rick Barnes’ Texas Longhorns seem to be all right in that area. But Barnes has found him­self in­struct­ing his young team on an­other fun­da­men­tal skill: shoot­ing layups. Texas vs. Texas State, 7 p.m., Er­win Cen­ter, LHN, 1300, 98.1

Miss­ing them is part of bas­ket­ball, but Longhorns Demar­cus Hol­land, Ioan­nis Pa­pa­petrou and Julien Lewis each butchered one un­con­tested layup dur­ing a 6563 loss to UCLA last week in Hous­ton.

Hol­land, a fresh­man, and Lewis, a sopho­more, ap­peared to miss be­cause they were un­de­cided be­tween dunk­ing and lay­ing the ball in the bas­ket.

“What we’ve told them all along is, if you are not go­ing to dunk it, use the glass,” Barnes said.
