Officer, bystander killed in shooting
A Bellaire police officer and a bystander are dead after a motorist opened fire following a traffic stop Monday morning in the 5600 block of Bellaire near Alder, authorities said. The suspected gunman was wounded.
John Cannon, spokesman for the Houston Police Department, said the officer, identified as 53-year-old Cpl. Jimmie Norman, stopped the driver of a black Honda for a traffic violation on Jessamine near Maple Ridge.
The driver sped away, Cannon said, and Norman gave chase. The vehicle turned into the driveway of a body shop at 5625 Bellaire. Norman followed the Honda into the shop’s parking lot about 8:50 a.m.
The motorist shot Norman, a 23-year veteran, before the officer could draw his weapon, authorities said. Then he fatally shot an unnamed bystander, believed to be the body shop manager, who came outside when he heard gunshots.
Two other Bellaire officers arrived and were fired upon. The two officers returned fire, hitting the suspect.
The suspect, who was found with a .380 caliber handgun, was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical condition. His identity was not immediately released. Doctors told investigators he is expected to survive.
